ZyMot Chamber – Advanced Sperm Selection with Microchip Technology

For couples struggling with infertility, sperm quality plays a decisive role in the success of IVF or ICSI treatment. It’s not only about sperm count and motility, but also morphology and—most importantly—DNA integrity. High levels of DNA fragmentation in sperm are linked to reduced fertilisation and implantation rates, as well as a higher risk of miscarriage.

The ZyMot chamber addresses this challenge with innovative microfluidic technology. By mimicking the body’s natural selection process, it isolates the healthiest, most motile sperm with intact DNA. This selected fraction can then be used in IVF or ICSI, potentially improving embryo quality and overall treatment outcomes.

What is the ZyMot Chamber?

The ZyMot chamber is a single-use microchip device designed for gentle sperm selection in assisted reproduction. Unlike conventional methods such as density-gradient centrifugation, ZyMot avoids mechanical stress and oxidative damage, offering a more natural, laboratory-based alternative.

How it works

  • Input chamber: The liquefied semen sample is placed into the entry compartment.
  • Microchannels: Motile sperm actively migrate through fine microchannels into the second chamber.
  • Output chamber: After about 30 minutes of incubation at body temperature, selected sperm can be collected and used directly for IVF or ICSI.

This process results in a higher proportion of sperm with good motility and intact DNA.

Medical Benefits of ZyMot

  • DNA integrity preserved: Reduced risk of oxidative stress compared to centrifugation.
  • Closer to natural selection: Only the healthiest, most motile sperm reach the target chamber.
  • Improved embryo development: Studies suggest a link to better fertilisation and, in some cases, higher implantation rates.
  • Gentle and standardised: Minimal handling and reproducible results.

Who Can Benefit from ZyMot?

The ZyMot chamber is not a replacement for IVF or ICSI, but an add-on that may be useful in certain situations:

  1. Reduced sperm motility or morphology issues – ZyMot helps enrich the healthiest sperm.
  2. High sperm DNA fragmentation – may lower miscarriage risk and improve fertilisation.
  3. Repeated IVF/ICSI failure – optimising sperm selection can sometimes make a difference.
  4. Recurrent miscarriage of unknown cause – focusing on DNA integrity can be valuable.
  5. Use in IVF and ICSI – ZyMot is especially effective in combination with ICSI but can also be applied in IVF when enough motile sperm are available.

Limitation: ZyMot requires a minimum number of motile sperm. In cases of very low motility (e.g., after TESE), alternative preparation methods may be needed.

How ZyMot is Applied in the Lab

  1. Sample collection and preparation – semen sample is provided on the day of egg retrieval.
  2. Loading the chamber – the liquefied sample is placed in the input chamber, culture medium in the output chamber.
  3. Incubation – at 37 °C for about 30 minutes, motile sperm migrate through the microchannels.
  4. Collection – the selected sperm are retrieved and immediately used for IVF or ICSI.

Compared to conventional sperm preparation:

  • No centrifugation → less mechanical stress.
  • Better DNA quality → fewer fragmented sperm.
  • Natural filtering effect → only robust, highly motile sperm succeed.

Costs of ZyMot Chamber

In Germany, ZyMot is considered an add-on service and is not part of standard IVF or ICSI costs.

  • Price: Exact costs are discussed transparently during consultation at Kinderwunschzentrum Dresden.
  • Insurance coverage: Public health insurance generally does not cover ZyMot. Private insurers may reimburse part of the costs depending on the policy.

The main reason it remains a self-pay option is the current scientific evidence: while many laboratory studies show promising results, large-scale clinical data are still being collected. At Kinderwunschzentrum Dresden we discuss the potential benefits and limitations of this additional method openly, so you can make an informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is ZyMot recommended for every couple?

No. ZyMot is most useful when sperm quality is reduced, DNA fragmentation is high, or IVF/ICSI has failed before.

Are there risks?

The method is safe and gentle, with no direct risks. The only limitation is that a sufficient number of motile sperm must be available.

What do studies say?

Laboratory research shows improved DNA integrity and motility with ZyMot selection, with some studies reporting higher fertilisation and implantation rates. Large-scale clinical data are still being collected.

Can ZyMot be used with ICSI?

Yes. ZyMot is most commonly used with ICSI but can also be applied to IVF treatments when sperm motility is adequate.
